Boys Golf General Information.

FEES:  All Mayo athletes pay a participation fee to the Athletic Department.  Each qualifiying golfer will also pay a separate fee to the the Mayo Golf Account.  The coach will inform you of the amount at the first meeting.

EQUIPMENT:  You will furnish your own golf clubs, tees, gloves, golf balls, and rule book necessary for competitive golf.

NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: Each season an average of 30-35 boys try out for golf.  Due to course pressure, the golf course administration requests that we cut the squad to 18 boys.  There are usually 8-10 boys on A-squad and 8-10 on the JV squad.

QUALIFYING:  It is expected that boy golfers at Mayo have experience playing golf.  Qualifying is based on your experience, ability, and grade.  You will play 18-36 holes to qualify for the team and qualifying will continue until the team is selected.  Different scoring averages are used depending on your grade.

MEETS:  There will be dual meets, conference triangulars, invitational tournaments, plus conference championship, section, and state.  You must provide your own transportation to the golf course for meets and practices.  Foe away meets you are provided transportation to and from Mayo High School.

ACADEMIC STANDARDS:  Golf participation requires long hours during the spring golf season.  Local matches involve a time period from 1:30-8:00 p.m. and some road trips might last from 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.  Any boy whose grades suffer due to school absence will be asked to discontinue golfing until his grades improve.
