The Rochester Alpine Ski Team was founded in 2005 by Barb and Dan Soderberg. They entered a very small team into the Welch Invitational, (an annual ski race at Welch Village that has been going for 45 years!) just to see if it would work. The next year, they began holding official practices, and had a couple of races against other teams. In 2010, the team became a High School Sanctioned sport. In 2019, the Alpine team became fully funded by the Rochester Public Schools.
The team usually has around 35-40 skiers, with representatives from each of the High Schools in Rochester and members from SE Minnesota that co-op with the team.
