At the age of 12, Shannon was diagnosed on April 15, 2011, with a brainstem glioma tumor (DIPG). This was a terminal diagnosis as this type of tumor is inoperable and incurable. Shannon fought her nine-month battle with determination and grace until passing away on January 6, 2012.
Shannon was a great friend and teammate who loved playing hockey. She participated in Rochester Youth Hockey from 2008 until her death. She skated for the last time on December 4, 2011 and passed away just 33 days later.
In her memory, and in conjunction with the Rochester (MN) Youth Hockey Association, the O’Hara family has set up a charitable account to help fund scholarships for higher education.
Rochester high school seniors who participated in Rochester Youth Hockey are eligible to apply. Must be used for higher education costs in the fall of 2019. We've increased the scholarship amount to $2,500 this year. Applications are due by Jan 10, 2019.
