Today our Governor and the MSHSL made the difficult decision to keep our students, staff, parents and communities safe. Spring of 2020 has been unprecedented in so many ways and today's MSHSL announcement regarding the cancellation of spring sports is another setback but we know the Mayo HS Class of 2020 has and will weather this latest adversity with strength, perseverance and hope. I know all spring sport athletes are saddened by this outcome but we all are still a team of Spartans. Please read through the MSHSL press release and refer to www.mshsl.org for continued up-to-date information. We also will be making an announcement regarding the refund of activities fees within the next few days.
Stay healthy and safe. Go Mayo!
PRESS RELEASE FROM THE MSHSL - 4/23/20
Minnesota State High School League
Cancellation of Remainder of 2019-2020 Activities
April 23, 2020
Consistent with Executive Order 20-41 issued by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on April 23, 2020, to extend the Distance Learning Period through the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year the Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors has declared that effective immediately:
• Minnesota State High School League spring athletics and fine arts have been cancelled for the remainder of their seasons. This includes all participation in MSHSL events including, but not limited to, practices, tryouts, scrimmages, contests and competitions as well as postseason tournaments.
• With this cancellation, all athletics are out of season. The provisions of Bylaw 208—Non-School Competition and Training are in effect.
At its meeting on Friday, April 24, 2020, the MSHSL Board of Directors will review related rules, policies and bylaws that impact participation based on this cancellation. Additional information and guidance for schools will be provided.
The Minnesota State High School League strongly encourages all students, coaches, advisors, officials and directors to adhere to all aspects of the Stay-At-Home order and participate fully in all recommended safety practices including social distancing, hand washing, covering their coughs and sneezes, and limiting unnecessary contact with others.
Many school districts across Minnesota and the country are developing creative ways honoring the senior class of 2020. Rochester Public Schools will be joining the “#BeTheLightMN” campaign. Rochester Public Schools is sending well wishes to all of our staff, students and especially our senior class of 2020. To our seniors, you have come so far and accomplished so many great things for our school district and community. We are thinking of all of you during this difficult time so please be safe and stay healthy from afar.
We ask that students, staff and parents do not congregate at the high schools but rather watch from afar while maintaining social distancing guidelines. Each Monday, this light of hope will take place at 8:20 pm (20:20 military time) for 20 minutes.
Coaches and student participation includes but not limited to, competitions, training, practices, scrimmages, contest, open gyms and captains practice. RPS Staff, Students and RPS coaches and volunteer coaches CANNOT use Rochester Public Schools indoor or outdoor facilities until further notice. We ask each student-athlete to use all precautionary measures necessary when training as recommended by the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). There are to be NO student group practices and workouts are to remain optional.
The spring season is still pending for May and June, please continue to watch our website for updates. and continue to STAY SAFE!
As you all may be aware, Governor Walz has enacted distance learning through the end of April. Students will not return to school until at least May 4, and that is subject to change. The MSHSL has suspended all activities during the school closure. This means we will not have any spring activities until at least May 4. We expect to hear more from the MSHSL over the next few days but for now we are in another holding pattern. The Big 9 Athletic Directors have been meeting regularly via video conferencing and will be meeting again tomorrow afternoon. We continue to make plans for a possible abbreviated season and hopefully a post season. This obviously has become a week by week scenario, and we continue to receive directions from our Governor, MSHSL and district leaders; we will react accordingly. We encourage you to follow Governor Walz’s directions and be safe!
I know our athletes benefit from being connected to our programs in so many ways, but it is at times like this that we see the overwhelming importance of a solid network of teammates and coaches to support each other. I will continue to give updates navigating through this unprecedented time.
Please continue to watch the MSHSL and Mayo Activities website for up-to-date press releases.
Please stay safe and healthy.
Mayo Spartan Family
As you all are very aware, that due to the ongoing uncertainty of the Corona Virus our Spring athletic season is on a big HOLD at this time. Please continue to check our website for up-to-date information at www.mayospartans.org
If you want the latest MSHSL info, please click on the MSHSL logo (Located on the left) for their updates, but Parents/guardians and students PLEASE do not email or call the MSHSL staff with questions or concerns.
Please direct your questions to Jeff Whitney at firstname.lastname@example.org
Activities Directors and Coaches Associations across Minnesota are concerned about their student-athletes and coaches. By reading false information on social media rather than it coming directly from the MSHSL to member schools will only cause more confusion and frustration.
I will tell you, as crazy and chaotic as our office is, I am missing it all, but I really miss my athletes and all of their smiles, questions and of course them just stopping in to check in and to say "hi"
I promise you, I will keep you updated as best I can in regards to what is happening with our Mayo athletic family. Please don't hesitate to reach out as I am sure there will be many unanswered questions as we move forward.
The one thing I can tell you to be prepared for is, if you think that your son or daughter will need a physical for next fall, (if you are unsure, email me and I will look), please keep in the back of your mind that once we get thru this crisis that you will need to get an appointment and get me that physical (emailed/mailed) as soon as you can. My plan (and hope) is to open up fall registration as we always have on July 1st, but as you know... it won't let you if the physical isn't on file or has expired.
I will continue to update this site as I get more info and as we move forward so check back frequently.
MOST IMPORTANTLY.... Please, please please keep your families and our athletes safe. I can't wait to see them all again in our hallways, in our weight room, on our fields/courts and them just being kids again!!!
You can contact me anytime, my contact info is on this homepage as well.
STAY SAFE EVERYONE!!!!!
