Information for 8th graders and their families:

In the past couple years, we have seen the Mayo Girls Soccer Program grow and numbers have significantly increased from 60 to 80 athletes. This is great to see for our program, but does not come without growing pains.

When I started coaching with Mayo, there were three teams. The lowest level team was C-squad and, at that time, we needed 7th and 8th graders to make up half or more of this team. C-squad is technically the 9th grade team. Since numbers have increased, we added a fourth team to accommodate. We are glad to have this many athletes wanting to play Mayo Soccer. However, we feel the issues we have run into may not provide all of the tools your athlete needs to grow. Since adding a fourth team, our biggest hurdle has been finding schools with four teams to play games. What this means is our fourth team does not get the number of games to benefit their play. Additionally, we have consistently had 20-25 athletes on each team making it difficult to create sufficient playing time for our C and B squads.

We are anticipating seeing numbers at 60-70 soccer participants for the 2024 season. We expect this number to increase as we get closer to the start of our season. If we exceed 80 participants, we might have to look at making larger cuts. Since Mayo soccer is considered a high school sport and, if large cuts need to be made, we may consider dropping 8th graders from the program (there may be exceptions to this based on skill).

We are excited to have so many athletes interested in Mayo soccer! This does not mean 8th graders can not try-out this upcoming season. We want to be as transparent as possible in advance to help prepare for the fall season and give you the best options for your athlete. There are other playing opportunities for soccer in Rochester for athletes under 9th grade, such as Minnesota Rush. The enrollment for fall competitive and fall rec close on July 27th and July 21st, respectively.

If you have any questions, coach Andre would be happy to answer them.

Concussion Testing

Concussion Testing will occur Wednesday June 5th at 8:30am in the Mayo HS Cafeteria. This is required for all athletes participating in Mayo Soccer, and needs to be completed prior to tryouts.

Players should complete the following prior to the testing day:

1. Fill out the RedCap Survey (Use QR code)
2. Download the Sway Medical app

If you cannot complete testing on June 5th, the backup date is July 30th!

*Due to scheduling difficulties in the Big 9 conference, we are unable to accept 7th grade athletes in the program this fall.

Mayo Soccer will be open to athletes grades 8-12.  Our goal is to have 3 teams so we can match up with the number of teams many opponents have.

Tryouts will begin on Monday, August 12th at Mayo High School.

The tryout sessions will be 1.5 hours for each grade level block. Athletes are expected to attend BOTH morning and afternoon sessions during this tryout period.

Tentative Fall Schedule

Please see tentative schedule for pre-Season and early September. The times and locations are subject change as we get closer to the specified dates. We may be adding a few more things to the schedule as well. We hope this will give athletes and families an idea of when different events are at the start of the season.

**UPDATE (8/4/23): Scrimmage with Kasson will be on Tuesday August 22nd. Due to limited field availability, this will be for JV and Varsity only.
